As far as crossover thrash goes, Municipal Waste have to be one of the shining lights in the newer generation of talent. Looking back, it’s hard to believe the four-piece have entertained us with their unstoppable riffs and mighty speed for over 10 years now. But why feel old and wrinkly about it when their shows are still this good?

Leeds act Anguish are the first band to blast off a night of all things heavy with their stoner hardcode infusions. Throughout the set, nice transitions are made to their sound, captivating everyone in attendance and truly maintaining intrigue. The weighty chugging speed and vivacious shrieks hook the initially sceptical, with a volume of people walking over to check the lads out. A good performance from the quintet gets the blood warmed and the action started.

Attacking the already-satisfied mood of this MOHO crowd, Welsh veterans Forsaken pull off a similar level of liveliness in their set. Unleashing heavy songs such as ‘Struggle’, ‘Dweller’ and ‘Beholder’ from their ‘No Peace’ demo, the band make sure that their presence is felt and embraced.

The room becomes agitated waiting for Scousers Iron Witch to perform next. But the itch for more is about to be scratched into a rash state, as they blast such rotten sludge into a receptive audience, exploring their ‘Single Malt’ and ‘Post Vegas Blues’ records. Demands of heaviness are met as they turn up the heat with their whisky-soaked dirt-ridden riffage. Sounding like someone trapped in a well calling for help, the frantic distress becomes a war-machine of success as chants flood MOHO, leaving everyone ready for the headliner.

There is an old saying that was made gospel. It goes something like “Municipal Waste are gonna fuck you up!” As the thrashers begin their set, it’s clear that phrase needs to be put down in a companion book or into a passage of holy rites. The Virginia-based metal machine shower the venue with thunderous riffs and rampage the night. When the Waste boys play many songs of their ever-growing back catalogue, including from new record ‘The Fatal Feast’, not one critter in the room is able to avoid the suction of bodies towards the front. Even if they manage to use evasive manoeuvres, more chaos endures. Complete with a scuba diver, inflatable boat and plenty of ladies going onstage only to find their way back to the pit again, laughter and madness ensue and it’s such a priceless sight to see.
