After the original planned date sold out damn fast, fans who were unable to get in were treated to the announcement that The Dillinger Escape Plan would play a special matinee performance; and how strange it is to be ready to roll in proper spectator fashion at 1pm in the afternoon. With no support on the afternoon bill there is a lengthy two hours between doors opening and the noise stalwarts hitting the intimate barfly stage, which is plenty of time for the cheque-shirted, chin stroking revellers to get a couple of orange juices inside them.
To a roaring applause, the band launch straight into a jolting attack with new track 'Good Neighbour', the intense energy not relenting for a second.
Even in a more cosy environment, it is apparent that The Dillinger Escape Plan have fully outgrown the trendy 'Math' or 'Spaz' tags they were lumped with in the beginning. They have developed a vigour and strong sense of songwriting to create soaring anthems such as 'Milk Lizard' and 'Farewell, Mona Lisa' aswell as the visceral 'Panasonic Youth' and 'Chinese Whispers'.
However, they glow with their fond attachment to cabaret and showmanship with the piano centre-piece in 'Mouth Of Ghosts' and the jazz ladened 'Black Bubblegum'. Even the rendition of Tears For Fear's 'Head Over Heels' seems to entrance the crowd into sombre acceptance.
Coming with a gem studded armoury of songs it's always the obligatory inclusion of '43% Burnt' that rouses a cacophony of flailing limbs. It's all as tight than a choir boy's arse of course. But then you already knew that. Fan-fuckin'-tastic stuff!
