As Soundshock rounds the corner into the West Yard of Camden’s infamous lock market a bizarre sight hits us. Where usually there are endless amounts of market stalls and foreign tourists buying unnecessary souvenirs for relatives there stands a group of teenagers. The queue, it transpires, is for an MTV Presents show featuring the one and only Fightstar as the main act. Last time Soundshock heard about these guys they were selling out shows all over the country as well as playing main stage at Reading and Leeds Festival, so what the hell is going on? We decide to investigate and dive straight in.
After a hastily done Google search it transpires that Fightstar have stepped down from the larger venues to this small capacity room in order to promote their deluxe edition of 'Be Human' which was released several days earlier. But what of the show?
Lower Than Atlantis and Spy Catcher open the night while the crowds of excited fans shuffle in from the cold. Unfortunately for these two acts the crowd seem to be only interested in one thing, Charlie Simpson and his band of merry men. While the crowd clap gracefully at the end of the show it’s clear that neither band really make an impression and are forgotten almost as soon as they exit stage right.
When, fifteen minutes later Fightstar walk onto the stage the previously dormant crowd go absolutely ballistic; cheering, screaming, clapping; it’s all there. After a short thank you from Charlie the band go straight into a song off their first E.P – 'Palahniuk’s Laughter'.
As the night progresses the band plays through a wide range of material,[see set list below] including a cover of ‘Vincent 'by Don Mclean and ‘Battlefield’ by Jordin Sparks. However, no song entrances the crowd as much as the finale – 'Cross Out the Stars', a song that doesn’t need much adapting to fit in with tonight’s acoustic vibe.
All in all Fightstar put on a good show; while nowhere near as good as they are when playing electrically they still honourably rose to the occasion and the fans reciprocated, singing along whenever possible, a lot of the times louder than the band itself.
