Camden on a dark night. The Underworld is busy from the off but with enough room to get to the bar and back without having to first psyche ourselves up.
New Yorkers It Dies Today are on stage with songs from there latest offering 'Lividity', someone has welded some catchy Linkin park-esque choruses onto their hardcore metal. Singer Jason Wood Flexes his muscles like Henry Rollins. Bass player Lemke, a "straight edger" gets his kicks on the stage, whereas guitarist Cappelli gives the impression he's playing in front of a mirror. Good natured slam dancing breaks out amongst the crowd, a preplanned rentamosh.
Kittie take to the stage to one of their own instrumentals and genuine warmth and excitement from a crowd that is here to rock. Front woman Morgan emerges in dark eyeliner and cropped blond hair, delivering a statement of intent with "What the F*&! is up London", before launching into the first 3 songs then breaking for a brief chat with the crowd mainly to give her band mates a breather and time to tune.
The band are tight, as they need to be, stop start riffs barrage us. Schizophrenic vocals switch from deep death metal to the lighter relief of a more melodic hook. Drummer Mercedes nods approvingly at her sister, joining in on some backing vocals where she attempts to outdo her in the 'from hell' stakes. The band are convincing as a unit with relative newcomers Tara and Ivy contributing classic rock solos and some ferocious headbanging reminiscent of Cliff Burton.
All in all the band marry the old and the new to create something unique, There's a natural hard edge to their sound, they are just doing what they do and whatever they want to do, which is why it works so well. |
