Sonisphere Festival

Knebworth, UK

A new morning and the sight of alcoholic abused, drug addled beings slither into the arena today for what is widely considered to be the better day, and LA sleazy fuckers Buckcherry launch into a rocked up set to ease deathly hangovers and vomit emptied stomachs. Paradise Lost bring everyone down a notch with their melodic doom before Jaz Coleman and Killing Joke play their brand of eclectic musical dissipation with ease and prove that to have been placed higher on the bill would’ve perhaps been better for them.

Saxon prove their godly status by rocking out harder than most even when faced with the adversity of catastrophic sound problems.

Lamb Of God, are like bread and butter. You know what you’re getting but they have the tendency to become a little bit bland, depending on the quality of both the bread and the butter. Respectively being the set material and execution. Cuts like “Walk With Me In Hell” and “Laid to Rest” come over as a bit like Warburtons and Vitalite; the energy is there but with nothing from “As The Palaces...” present, it’s all just a bit lacklustre.

The same cannot be said of Mastodon though. Who thankfully perform a thrilling collection of tracks which include ‘Oblivion’, ‘Iron Tusk’ and ‘The Czar’, which embody their ability to be one of the few original bands around! Oh, what do we have here? To absolutely no surprise but much furore, Machine Head launch into a pummelling set including all the favourites such as ‘Ten Ton Hammer’ and ‘Davidian’ and yes, the crowd go wild for it.

Newport’s pop rockers, Feeder shouldn’t have been as much as a surprise considering they headlined Download Festival a few years back, and they were fairly well received here too. Such happy chappys.

Baseball cap donning, nu-metal stalwarts Limp Bizkit take to the Apollo to a rather tipsy applause and ignite that nostalgic angst they used to cause with frothy lumps ‘Break Stuff’, ‘Nookie’ and ‘Take A Look Around’. Enjoyable but weightless.

A much anticipated set, the return of Alice In Chains, with new album in tow, Duvall strides confidently into songs such as ‘Check My Brain’ as well as the old favourite ‘Would?’. A wonderfully nostalgic set! A bewildering show is illustrated by a muscular Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails as they leave out crowd favourites but include lesser known tracks. A trick or a treat? It’s hard to say, but for a band that has always fed off controversy throughout their career, they have continued this trend.

Avenged Sevenfold close the Saturn Stage with a spirited show filled with the obligatory sharp haircuts and tight fashionable attire. Love them or hate them, they’re entertaining.

The moment Sonisphere have waited for all weekend, arguably the only act that has mattered at this festival. The mighty Metallica ferociously launch into ‘Blackened’ and fly through a set brimming with classics and a couple of un-expected treats. Despite them not being as fiery as they have been in the past, they still manage to pull off a set with integrity and professionalism. With headliners like this, Sonisphere could be set to be a staple in the rock festival calendar.
