‘Technicolor’ is the debut release from German art metal band Dioramic. It’s a strange amalgamation of metal and post-hardcore, with moments evocative of the kind of rambling indie rock you might expect from the likes of Muse or Radiohead. Dioramic’s sound moves seamlessly from genre to genre and just when you think you are getting to understand the band’s sound a little they unleash another surprise change in direction.
The album opens with ‘Ghosts In The Machine’ a slow burner which is part snarling anger and part beautiful melody. ‘The Antagonist’ features vocalist Arkadi Zaslavski whispering during the breakdowns then launching unexpectedly into violent screams as the music kicks back in. This structure sets up the mood for the rest of the album as Dioramic’s songs fuse delicate ambiance with unrelenting, aggressive energy.
Dioramic will probably suffer from the tag of being too ‘muso’ to be accessible to a wider audience, however, they never get boring and even after multiple listens, you’ll never quite reach the level where you would feel comfortable categorising them with doing them serious injustice. ‘Technicolor’ is an undoubtedly a complex album, simultaneously confusing, fascinating and undeniably unique.
