Glam metal is a way of life that can only really be understood from the inside. However, love it or laugh at it, there is something to be paradoxically admired about someone who is prepared to stand up there dressed like a non-gender specific sex worker, with ridiculously big hair, guitar round their knees and an attitude that says they are never coming back. Blackrain definitely tick these boxes, and if we provisionally accept that there is some kind of kitsch value in this genre, the next question is: are these guys any good at it? Well, the first three songs on 'License to Thrill' are competent, catchy and reasonably well put together. After that it trails off a bit, creatively. There are a couple of compulsory ballad type numbers, ‘No Forever’ and ‘Baby It’s you’. Coke ad pretentions, yes, but Wrathchild or Twisted Sister, softening into G’n’R or Bon Jovi later in their careers, it ain’t.

In the face of such damning criticism, I would expect Blackrain to stumble slightly on their three inch heels, give you the sneer and the finger gesture and carry on regardless. Fair play to them.
