Seldom is the reek of old school carnage so authentically captured as in the brutal minimalism of 'Mortuary Rendezvous.' Its gore-spattered cover art alone is riddled with early nineties nostalgia, which unfolds as an iconic mass of sprawling solos and cavernous bass.

The ultimate remedy to overly-manicured metal, Sinners Burn's traditional stance yields a raw, if slightly muddy end result. The absence of a solid rhythm section is glaringly apparent on occasion, particularly during the otherwise face-melting 'Buried In Barbed Wire,' where low-slung grooves clash with a tinny succession of snares. By a similar principle, frontman Marcus Ankarberg's shallow snarls are found lacking in depth and stamina, frequently lapsing into a state of semi-clean limbo.

Nevertheless, the Swedish quartet's combination of razor-sharp and sludgy guitars remains heavy as a coroner's slab. With its dual death grunts and lightning-fast riffs, 'Baptized By Evil' is a fiercely demonic standout, while 'Ancient Gods' features equally appealing fits of aggression. Remarkably, these bludgeoning episodes are agile in delivery and replete with infectious hooks.

Though 'Mortuary's...' more slow-paced offerings purvey a certain lumbering, Night Of The Living Dead-esque charm, the rapid-fire likes of 'There Will Be Blood' are positively dripping with adrenalin. Executed at breakneck speed, this unholy assault features a multi-layered mix of howling solos and faintly melodic accents. Paying homage to the death metal genre's gore-laden trademarks, the album also delivers a generous dash of dark humour played out via a ghoulish procession of cartoon cover art and sadistic lyricism.

Despite undeniable vocal flaws, Sinners' seasoned expertise and convincingly old school sound deserves due appreciation.
