Kladovest - Escape in Melancholy
1. Abyss of Broken Clocks
2. Gritted Fangs
3. Tead of Silk
4. Insignificant Bile
Although Kladovest may be little-known, the vocalist behind this Ukrainian black metal band is Thurios from the acclaimed Drudkh. Kladovest are essentially a duo; Thurios handles vocals and Dmitry K handles all the instruments. Themes and lyrics are handled by Alexander A.
Opening with the ten minute long ‘Abyss of Broken Clocks’, the tone of the buzzing guitar suggests ‘Escape in Melancholy’ will be an introspective observation. The drums do not kick in until after four minutes but it certainly does not feel like four minutes. The song is melancholy and surprisingly soft with an increase of melody at the tail end of the track.
Many of the melodies throughout the album are sumptuous and creative, particularly the opening of ‘Gritted Fangs’ which morphs into a vicious, modern, black metal onslaught and ‘Tead of Silk’s, daringly optimistic guitar lead. But most importantly, it works. The melancholy dissipates and makes the release less linear. The closing number features an honest near-acoustic guitar before descending into the depths of frustrated black metal.
This is such a pleasant surprise in the world of modern black metal. No pretentious or forced post-rock passages; no desperate grasp towards rawness, just creative atmosphere evocation.
