There seems to be a glut on the market at the doom end of the post-metal market these days. From ISIS to Storm of Light to Minsk, you’re never short of a nine minute movement to lose yourself in. Now we have Italians At The Soundawn. Well, that’s a bit of a misnomer, since this is actually their second album. And they’re not that doomy.
Anyway, what we have a here is an accomplished set of songs that comfortably fill their running time. While the opening track’s vocals have a faint whiff of emo about them, there’s also the welcome intervention of mournful blues trumpet to show that invention in this genre is not just limited to plundering the depths of despair.
In fact, in contrast to their American peers, the Italians have a rather more laid-back attitude more in common with 70s prog: despite the hoarse roars in ‘Caofedian’, with its major key riffing it still retains an uplifting quality. You’re never in danger of psychosis here, with the closing track being almost jaunty. ‘Sifting’ is not entirely essential, but is still a damn well played album, especially on the closing track. Roll on album number three.
