Avsky - Scorn

1.     As the Mountains Collapse
2.     No Compassion, No Regrets
3.     Dead End
4.     The Beyond
5.     Scorn
6.     The Sickness Within

Avksy, which is Swedish for disgust, really does suit the overall tone of this, their third album. Each track is dripping with abhorrence and loathing which creates something very dark indeed.

‘Scorn’ is very much black metal stripped bare going with old fashioned style simplicity in both sound and delivery. There is a mixture of both speed and some very slow droning sections which create a very doom-like atmosphere but without the heaviness of funeral doom, more along the lines of a not-so-down tuned Nortt.

There is a slight reprieve mid-album with ‘Dead End’ which is a slow ambient number which breaks things up well before the gloom continues!

The album is more interesting to listen to than some of the other ‘depressive’ black metal on the market at the moment and benefits from cranking up the pace at times to make it a more interesting listen. Comparisons could be made of early Burzum when it comes to the vocals and in general with Craft (according to the band’s website Nox from Craft makes a guest appearance on the album).

The album is solid throughout and delivers nearly 50 minutes of hate filled misery to darken the soul.
