It almost seems like an inconceivable idea but it is true, ‘redneck black metal’ does exist! Blood Cult includes the ubiquitous Reverend J.R. Preston who has produced many with various bands over the years but mostly with this one.
The concept of the band itself is somewhat different to comprehend (possibly more so on this side of the pond) and it does indeed to be an eclectic mix of raw black metal with some widdly guitar parts and even some country twangs at times.
‘Illinoisan Altar’ is by far the most Southern sounding track and possibly more along the lines of what would be expected by the concept of the band, whereas ‘Seeds’ doesn’t even have a hint of the redneck about it!
Interestingly there doesn’t seem to be a sniff of humour about this release, which may come as a surprise. The blend of the two different styles often sounds rather confusing, like accidentally sticking on the latest Darkthrone album and playing some rockabilly in the background!
Blood Cult most definitely offers a very acquired style and it is possible that a large amount of moonshine might increase the listening experience!
