German heavy metal band Rage, are back with yet another good album to spread across the nation. The part-power metal influenced old-timers have never been a highly recognisable force, despite the first incarnation of the band releasing their first album in 1984. However, they have always remained true to what they have wanted to achieve, whilst every album consists of the same basic ingredients, they all have a slightly different flavour. That’s why when you put on a Rage album, you know it’s them and you know what to expect!
Filled with attitude-based riffs and addictive harmonies, 'Strings to a Web' is clearly the offspring of 2006’s more orchestral based ‘Speak of the Dead’ and 2008’s ‘Carved in Stone’ which takes the more traditional heavy metal route. Rage’s nineteenth studio album is most definitely a clear blend between the two. Consisting of ultimately 10 different songs, as well as the epic 16 minute ‘Empty Hollow’ (that’s split into 5 parts), every track has its own sound and are all noticeable.
Despite most probably not acquiring to everyone’s taste, Rage should certainly be given the benefit of the doubt with Strings to a Web. They are most certainly being a lot more experimental than the rest of the traditional heavy metal band out there; despite how good a lot of them may be, are Rage on the path to creating a new trend? We will have to see with their next release...
