It has been a whole three years since Finntroll last released an album, ‘Ur Jordens Djup’ marked a significant change in the band introducing a new singer and darker musical direction.

‘Nifelvind’ seems to have hit the nail on the head when it comes to blending in the usual folk elements and continuing to incorporate some more black metal elements. But, don’t think for a minute there aren’t still a serious amount of ‘oom pah’ rhythms going on!

‘I Trädens Sång’ is probably the fastest track Finntroll have ever recorded, it sounds more like blackened thrash but with added keyboards and is a real belter of a track. That is in start contrast to ‘Galgasång’, which is entirely acoustic and sounds more like a traditional Finnish folk song. This is by far the most diverse album the band has produced, when it comes to all the different musical elements incorporated.

There is still very much the element of fun in this album, the odd kettledrum sounding accompaniment to the guitars and a few ‘heys’ chucked in along with the galloping guitars just make ‘Nifelvind’ so enjoyable.

Overall, this is a wonderfully constructed album, which delivers what would be expected from a band of this calibre and a whole lot more on top.
