American thrash heroes Overkill kick start the new decade with a brand new studio output, entitled ‘Ironbound’. Overkill have been thrashing it out for thirty years now and their sound has changed substantially since their early days. ‘Ironbound’ is sticking to the modern thrash metal cacophony with near tangible guitar melodies and groove, riffs that support rather than carry the song forward and unfortunately, insipid drumming for the most part. The deep vocals on ‘Head and Heart’ are laughable while the shouted chorus of ‘Give a Little’ is horrendous and sounds passionless. They should just exclusively use Bobby Blitz’s great vocals.

Some songs are lengthy, which is not a good idea for thrash metal. They can be summarised quite succinctly and get straight to the thrashing point. The power chords are a wasted opportunity for razor sharp thrash riffs. Indeed Overkill do have employ formidable riffs (some of the chugga riffs actually work) and rather neat solos (definitely the highlight of the album) but not enough creative material to be considered outstanding. Perhaps the band is running low on ideas because this album is very unmemorable.

This review is horseshit! This album is actually a damn fine return to form.
