Debut album from Swedish black metallers ‘Horde of Hel’, two thirds of which is made up from members of In Battle, not that there is much resemblance to speak of.

The album is in the vein of more traditional black metal but there are quite a number of ambient-style industrial sections. Many of the electronic parts of the songs are really quite experimental and may not to be everybody’s tastes as they are a mish-mash of creepy sounds, slightly baffling samples mixed with keyboard effects.

The tracks, which actually contain proper riffs and song structures, sound like a rougher version of some of the more recent mid-paced Marduk albums (maybe not too much of a surprise as Marduk’s bassist mastered the album!). The quality of the production is actually quite high but not too polished to take away the dismal tone throughout, it does sound quite bleak at times, in the right sort of way for this genre!

It is a good first effort but doesn’t quite reach the musical heights that would take them to the next level which, in the sea of bands these days is hard to do. At times, the more obscure sections do detract from the rest of the album as it is almost like listening to a few decent tracks sandwiched between a selection of intro music!
