Liverpool quintet Carcer City have set the bar high with their debut release ‘The Life We Have Chosen’. This is metalcore at its finest; loaded with the mass appeal, the lack of which sees so many British metal bands fall by the wayside, yet maintaining a raw and intense edge. The vocals are stunningly ferocious, intertwined with the occasional melodic moment.
Although the quintessential metalcore sound is there and the Killswitch Engage influence is clearly present, Carcer City have injected their own youthful and contemporary sound into this album. With an enigmatic take on metal, this is a brutal melange of aggression and quiet, ambient moments where the music thins and the vocals turn to spoken word, evocative of progressive-hardcore. This technique is used to stunning effect on ‘The Life We Have Chosen. Part 2’ and ‘Patience Won’t Heal The Broken’.
‘The Life We Have Chosen’ is a massive, almost epic album, charged with emotion and with more breakdowns than your local psych ward. Based on this release it seems Carcer City are certainly set for serious success.
