Having been in a constant state of evolution, morose Swedes and Opeth chums, Katatonia have never made their “finest album”, there is always a sour taste, that one or two tracks on any given album are classics and the rest are a little underdressed with the usual magic they are so capable of offering.  If 2006’s ‘The Great Cold Distance’ was a step in progression, then ‘Night Is The New Day’ is a leap! Whereas they almost hit the zenith with ‘...Cold Distance’, every track being as infectious as the other, it was prevalent that this wasn’t the best thing they could do.

Well, ‘Night...’ is simply magical and the album you have waited for them to do!
Opening the album with a straight-to-business type of riff, ‘Forsaker’ is crushingly heavy for the most part, more so than anything in the last two or three albums. While the softer distinction in sound blends seamlessly with Jonas’ vocals sounding stronger, more confident in delivering melancholy and ever more emotive than before, ‘Onward Into Battle’ being commendable to this.

It is arguable that ‘The Great Cold Distance’ was a collection of equally great tracks by a band finally finding their feet, an improvement on albums before. ‘Night Is The New Day’ is the album that flows effortlessly along, every delicate melody charming the tears from your eyes and every weighty riff hammering remorse into you only for you to sadistically press play again.
