Sometimes, all you need is a healthy dose of metal to thrash your guts out. And with veterans Kreator providing one of this year’s highlights, relative Greek newcomers Suicidal Angels are here to prove it’s not just the old ‘uns that are the best.
Musically speaking, this is lustfully old school in its approach: fulsome riffing that’s played at optimal windmilling speed, and the type of solos you thought were out of fashion outside a Slayer record. In the grandest thrash tradition, it starts with a grandiose introduction, then ‘Bloodthirsty’ lets rip with a breakneck pace. And so it continues for the next 40 minutes, one bout of savagery after another. Particular mention must go to the exquisite production, which imbibes the guitars with more knock out juice than Mike Tyson, especially in the finale of ‘Lies’. Not only that, the production also gives the bass an awesomely meaty sound, especially on ‘Inquisition’, where in tandem with the bass drumming feels like it could damage internal organs.
In amongst the whip-lash inducing rhythms, there’s some nice songwriting going on – the bass break in ‘Atheist’ is one example, as well as the razor sharp gear changes of ‘The Pestilence Of Saints’. ‘Apokathilosis’ has a tempo change that sets the unwary up for the sudden onslaught finale. If you’re after a slab of no-nonsense thrash, pick this up.
