With the past decade seeing some huge reunions, the biggest was possibly that of KISS, one of the most outrageous rock bands of all time. With the face paint coming off in past years, the presence of the boys’ black and white mugs on the album art suggests that this is very much a return to their original glammed up roots, back with the hard rock riffs, and big vocals and sound that will make many people feel like they have stepped into a time machine and landed back in the 70s. For their nineteenth studio album, this does not feel laboured or rushed (heck, it took eleven years to come out), and the result is a premium slice of rock that still shocks.

Rather than the flood the listener with a running time that’s longer that Gene Simmond’s tongue, we have a concise forty minutes of first class material with no filler, the highlights of which include the single and opener ‘Modern Day Delilah’, as well as the singalong ‘Say Yeah’ and LA Guns-esque ‘Never Enough’. Whilst these songs risk fitting a single mid-paced tempo template, we have a welcome break in the form of ‘I’m An Animal’, which provides slower and more stoner-influenced riffing.

KISS have certainly come back with a bang that will no doubt bolster their position as masters of the hard rocking and shocking. Even if it was a cash grab, with music this good, who cares?
